Alpine ski touring in the Atlas Mountains in Morocco is a wonderful combination of magnificent mountain scenery, amazing, odd ski adventures and fascinating travel experience. We start and finish in the unrivaled old trading town of Marrakech, as with its winding alleyways in the old medina is an exotic travel experience to remember for a long time. From Marrakech we head up to the Atlas Mountains, to the small village of Imlil, where we load our skiing equipment on mules and hike up to the mountains to Refuge Les Mouflons, which is the base camp for our days of ski touring.
We spend five days in the mountains and make trips to some of the highest peaks in North Africa, such as Ouanoukrim, Timezguida, Akella and others. One of the days we attempt to climb the highest peak, Jebel Toubkal, 4,167 meters above sea level. Amazing views of the surrounding mountains and the desert below make the trip a very special experience.
We are guided by Oskar Brodén, ski touring guide and avalanche technician in Åre in winter time and kayaking and climbing guide at Upplevelsebolaget during summer. In addition to fantastic nature and skiing experiences, you will learn a lot about skiing, ski touring, snow, avalanches and staying safe in the mountains. We do not believe in “equipment hour” or “avalanche safety hour”, we believe in making sure you feel cared for and welcome as a guest throughout your stay, and that your entire time together with us will be full of inspiring learning and a memorable experience.

Testimonials
The way I see it, in general, when you travel with Upplevelsebolaget, is that of course you can probably experience the same type of skiing from another supplier. In the end, it's all about what conditions you have/get and you can't control that. But you can't top Upplevelsebolaget (Jocke and Oskar) when it comes to everything around such as, preparations, how to feel welcome, commitment, planning, safety, entertainment, own participation (where else can you be involved in deciding a destination and come up with a wish list?), the opportunity to have a coffee, both in Åre and Uddevalla. Besides, I'm pretty sure there are, at least, umpteen new stories to tell, which we're looking forward to. So for me, the decisive factor as to why I travel, and will travel, with Upplevelsebolaget is precisely those I mention above. Participation and care.
Previous experience
The goal of the journey is to have great nature and cultural experiences in nice company in a fantastic environment. To get the most out of your trip, you need to be a confident skier, with some experience of off piste skiing and also some previous ski touring experience. Having spent some time with us in Norway is an excellent preparation for this trip. We will spend time at an altitude with less oxygen than at sea level and in relatively steep terrain. You therefore need to be reasonably fit and to look forward to several hours of effort each day.
Included in the price
- Seven days of experiences, including hiking and alpine ski touring guided by Swedish (Upplevelsebolaget) guide
- 8 nights accommodation (2 nights at riad / hotel in Marrakech, 1 night at guest house in Imlil and 5 nights at mountain station)

Optional extras
What would be nicer than one day standing on a snow-covered peak just over 4.000 meters above sea level, and the next day surfing the Atlantic Ocean in waves rolling in towards the African West Coast. That’s exactly what we intend to do. After descending from the Atlas Mountains, we continue to Taghazout, Morocco’s most beautiful surfing site, where we spend a week. Hanging on the beach, eating good food and staying unforgettably cool at the coast’s most creative design hotel. And, of course, surfing. Extend your Moroccan experience and hang out with us for another week.
Accommodation
Our first and last night we stay in a charming riad in Marrakech. We spend one night at a guesthouse in Imlil and five nights in our base camp at the “mountain station” Refuge Les Mouflons, in the Atlas mountains. Accommodation in Marrakech is comfortable, while accommodation in the mountains is simple but functional.
Program
A schedule to any guided outdoor activity is always dependent on external conditions such as weather, wind and snow conditions, and a plan is therefore never more than a plan. The following program is therefore preliminary:
Day 1
Travel day. You are responsible for your trip to Morocco. We meet up in Marrakech, check in to our riad, explore the alleyways of the old medina and eat dinner together.
Day 2
Transport to Imlil at 1.800 meters altitude. Check in at our guest house is followed by an acclimatization hike in the surroundings. We then have time to organize our packing and have dinner together.
Day 3
Hiking from Imlil to Refuge Les Mouflons, which is our ski touring base camp, at 3,200 meters altitude. A beautiful day in the hiking boots with a day pack on our back. The ski equipment is loaded onto donkeys carrying it up to the base camp, where we install ourselves and have dinner in front of the fireplace.
Day 4-7
Ski touring days. We plan and make the tours that conditions permit. The area around the base camp has several peaks over 4.000 meters altitude, possible to reach on skis. One of the days we aim to reach the highest peak of North Africa and Atlas Mountains, Jbel Toubkal, 4.167 meters above sea level. We eat breakfast and dinner at the mountain station. It’s simple, but well-sourced, filling and good tasting. During the tours we carry a packed lunch and eat on the trip. Extra energy and snacks can be bought at the mountain station.
Day 8
Time to pack the mules and hike down to Imlil again, where transport awaits us to take us back to Marrakech. Last evening dinner and great stories about the weeks achievements.
Day 9
Breakfast and packing. Transfer to the airport. Journey home. Unless you have chosen to stay with us and spend a week surfing on the coast.
