Alpine ski touring on Senja

Still a hidden gem, Senja, Norway’s second largest island, is tucked away between its more famous neighbors Lofoten and Tromsö. With mountains towering above the fjords and the Atlantic ocean the island offers miraculously beautiful hard-to-beat views. Touring and skiing the arctic slopes will create long lasting memories for skiers of all levels of experience.
Alpine ski touring or backcountry skiing is an amazing way to combine the joy of off piste skiing and great nature experiences, away from the crowds and noice of ordinary ski resorts. Even though Senja is the country’s second largest island it’s still small enough to be reasonably well explored in a week. We will have the chance to tour and ski open snow fields, narrow coloirs and sparse forests, all depending on prevailing conditions and wishes of the group. And everything without long approaches or hours of driving. Needless to say the proximity to water, the fjords and the ocean, makes the environment truly special.
Accommodation
A nice house right next to the fjord in Mefjord, situated on the northern part of the island, is our base camp for the week. We will sleep in double rooms and enjoy all necessary comfort, like hot showers, free wifi and fully equipped kitchen, before and after our tours.

Travel to and from
You will need to get to northern Norway on your own. Below are a few travel options to consider.
- By car. If you come from reasonably close your best option might be to drive. That will of course get you all the way to your final destination, Mefjord brygge, on the island of Senja. Before comitting to this alternative, please note that it’s a long drive. From Göteborg you have a good 24 hour (2000 km) drive, from Stockholm 20 hours (1600 km) and even from Oslo a slow 22 hour (1600 km) drive. On top of that you should plan for breaks, of course. Should you decide to drive we will try to matchmake to see if you can share your ride with someone else starting from a place near you. All because of sustainability reasons, but also because it’s nice to get to know other skier(s) already on the journey.
- By air. If you come from afar, it’s probably most convenient to fly. You should aim for either Tromsö or Bardufoss, trafficked by (among others) Norwegian Air. Pickup and drop off will be arranged to and from the airport. Before buying your ticket(s) please consult us in order for us to arrange pick up for the whole group.
Time & place
We will pick you up (and drop you off) at the airport after agreement. If you drive your own car it’s good to plan for an arrival around 16-17. All local transport, to and from the mountains, is arranged by us on location.
Previous experience
You don’t have to be an expert ski tourer to join us on this adventure. It is, however, recommended to have tried ski touring with skins before and to be familiar and reasonably comfortable with off piste skiing. Uphill we keep a low steady pace that makes us last the whole week. Going down you can expect skiing in various conditions and at varying gradients, sometimes up to around 40 degrees in good snow conditions. As always, we will adapt to the conditions and the wishes and experience of the group.
